“This kind of job is a nice high-quality, low-impact cutting," Mr. Bird said. “The Toles get rid of dead trees without tearing up the woods.” Mr. Bird and Mr. Lester will split the money they get from selling the lumber with the Toles.
On Friday both teams of horses were planting a field in oats, alfalfa and timothy. “They’re multi-purpose,” Mr. Bird said. “They can grow their own food, and when you’re through working them, you can ride.”
So far the Toles are happy with their choice of logger. “I’m pleased with the minimal impact that has occurred there so far,” Mrs. Tole said. “There is a lot of regeneration in the forest already with white pines and some white oaks. It is more aesthetically pleasing.”
But now the Toles have another problem. They grow Christmas trees and rhododendrons for nursery stock. The short needle pines are being attacked by a pine bark beetle. They are trying to figure a way to stop that destruction without cutting down all the short needled pines.
