Don’t over-fertilize: Avoid heavy spring or summer fertilizing which promotes heavy turf growth that is prone to diseases and traffic damage. Take a soil test to determine the right amount of phosphate and potash (two key nutrients in most fertilizers) to apply.
Mow higher: Mow shaded lawn three to four inches high, rather than the 1 Vi to 2¥> inches normally recommended for sunny areas. Longer grass plants have more surface area available to catch sunlight needed for photosynthesis, the process in which plants take energy from the sun and convert it into food.
