It was the first year for the Eva Smith trophies, won by RCHS track stand-out Charlie Thomas of Sperry - ville and Mary O’Meara of Sperryville. Ms. O’Meara had been the first woman Rappahannock resident to complete the course the first year as well.
The longest time, interestingly, was two hours that year, or about 20 minutes per mile. The Rappahannock News account, charitably, did not say who took that honor.
In the third Fodderstack, a Quantico Marine, Doug Wood, set a new course record of 114:17, beating a field of 241. Laura Mink won the women’s division with a time of 48:30.
Mr. Reynolds, who had moved to the county in the meantime, won the second Eva Smith for men, and Merrill Strange for the women.
There was no top-vegetarian category, but note was taken of the women competing in the mothers
