to produce high-quality fruit in the home orchard on old, large trees because the spray pressure commonly used is inadequate to force the pesticides to the tops of such trees. Therefore, old trees should be replaced with dwarf trees that are allowed to reach a height of no more than 12-15 feet.

“If you can raise a good crop without the extra work and expense of a lot of tillage, why do the tillage?” asks John Jeffries of the Soil Conservation Services (SCS).
“The objective of any tillage program is to get a crop up and growing with as little competition from weeds as possible,” Mr. Jeffries said, noting that keeping the top soil “is a direct benefit to farmers.”
In today’s agriculture, using the words conservation and tillage together has two meanings—to preserve, or to save soil, and to reduce, or conserve, costs in performing tillage.
