Mrs. Snead said Mrs. Johnston was also talented in music and took a major role in planning programs. “She was my right-hand man,” Mrs. Snead said. Mrs. Johnston played a major role in arranging the Christmas and seventh-grade graduation programs. But the major event each year was the May Day program. Participants had to meet certain health requirements, and each year there was a queen and king of health.
Together they wrote the words; Mrs. Johnston took on most of the responsibility for the music and decorations. One of the other teachers called them “Rappahannock’s Rogers and Hammerstein,” Mrs. Snead said. .
