Following high school Mrs. Johnston and her sister went to Fredericksburg State Teachers College, now Mary Washington. They both became teachers. Jobs were scarce when they graduated. Her sister got the only job in Madison County, and Mrs. Johnston went to a one-room school in Greene County.
“I boarded and walked one mile to and from school,” she said. “We had a pump in the yard and a pot bellied stove where we built a fire for heat.” She had 15 students in first through seventh grades. “The larger children helped with the smaller ones. That was the only way I could have managed,” she said.
She next taught in a two-room school, also in Greene County. She was also the principal. Next she was principal and teacher in a four-room school in Ruckersville. Altogether, she taught seven years in Greene County.
By then, her sister was teaching in Culpeper. Mrs. Johnston joined her at Ann Wingfield school, starting with a sixth-grade class. The superintendent asked her to go to seventh grade the next year with her class. She taught seventh grade there for two years. On a double

The Culpeper-Madison-Rappahannock Farm Show is planning something new this year: a craft show.
It will be held at the Culpeper Agricultural Enterprise Grounds from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, July 26.
