From classroom management to flower arranging, whenever Christine Johnston has tried something, she has excelled at it.
Bom in Madison County, she attended local schools and graduated from Madison County High School during the Great Depression. “Money was short, and times were hard,” she said.
Her father was the youngest of 13 children, bom when his father was in his 70s and his mother was in her late 40s. His mother said to his father, ‘Tap, we’ve got to cut this foolishness out,” Mrs. Johnston reports.
She notes that her grandfather, ' who died before she was bom, was alive at a time when Thomas Jefferson was still living. When the Civil War ended he told his slaves they - were free to go, but 11 stayed, not having any place to go. “You wonder ; how anyone could raise that many children and feed and clothe them, but they had a lot of help,” she said.
Two of those slaves were still living when she stayed at her grandmother’s house as a small child. “They were really old. I would see them coming down the lane smoking l com cob pipes, and I was afraid of them, but they were as kind and
