Sheriff John Henry Woodward said his office received several reports that someone might have been trapped by the blaze, but that a through search of the ' debris turned up no evidence that anyone was inside the house when the fire started.
Woodward said firefighters from Flint Hill, Washington, Chester Gap, Sperryville, Amissville and Castleton battled the blaze, which was reported at 9:39 a.m. The house, which had been rented to seasonal farm workers, according to Woodwaard, was gutted by the time firefighters arrived on the scene.
The cause of the fire had not been determined Tuesday evening. ^
In other police news this week:
•James Preston “Dickie” Walters was sentenced to three years in jail each of two felony charges resulting from the burglary of Ricardo Serreno’s home on Route 630 last year. A safe was taken from the house, and Woodward said nearly $5,000 in cash was reported missing.
Walters still faces sentencing for an escape from the county jail last year, as well as two other break-ins in Hie Flint Hill area. He will return to court next month on those charges, Woodward said. 4
• A 13-year-old Castleton girl is still missing after she allegedly wrecked a 1986 Chevrolet Oct. 13, according to Woodward.
Virginia State Trooper C.A. Moore said the car ran off the right side of Route 640 at 4 a.m., and hit a tree. The driver fled the scene, and charges are pending.
