According to Edwards, this is important to the life of a car for a number of reasons.
“Due to the economy and affordability, people do less maintenance, and repair only what’s broken,” he said. “We see a lot of newer cars (2 to 3 years old) with degenerative anti-freeze. The past few winters have been considerably mild, so people do not feel that they have to check the coolant since things are not breaking as they would have irvextreme weather.”
During the cold months, many cars in need of service have fuel injection or condensation problems. “Newer cars have smaller motors, and must burn hot to bum clean,” Mr. Edwards explained. “These cars run so hot — the motor can operate as high as 280 degrees — that the oil breaks down and gets into the breathing system of the car. It becomes very important to clean the injection and induction systems of the car,” he continued.
Of course, good, clean gasoline is vital to proper engine function. Amoco gasoline has already met the EPA standards for 1993, and is using the D. C. Metro area as a testing ground for gasolines which have been reformulated to reduce carbon monoxide emissions.
