It’s the explanation resulting from four years of research to determine why cooling system hoses fail prematurely and unexpectedly. '
A manufacturer who studied the problem determined that the hose and the antifreeze mixture, interacting with various metals in some engines, forms an electrical voltage.
This small voltage (5 to 150 millivolts) initiates an electrochemcial process that ultimately creates micro-cracks (striations) in the hose tube. These cracks widen, and the result is a pinhole leak or an actual hose burst.
This is the major reason for cooling system hose failure. Because such deterioration occurs from within, neither the owner nor the mechanic are able to visually detect a problem.
