Lehman says an annual diagnostic checkup, along with routine service and maintenance parts replacement, ensure ti-ouble-free driving even on older, high mileage vehicles.
“Newer computerized engines compensate for discrepancies, camouflaging malfunctions,” he says. “Eventually, when the condition exceeds the computer’s ability to compensate, the mechanism fails.
Trouble areas to watch for:
• Filters, especially the fuel filter on engines with fuel injection. These should be replaced in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations and/or as part of tune-up services.
• Cooling system. Overheating can cause serious damage to an engine: also, a cold running engine is inefficient and vulnerable to premature wear.
• Engine oil, too old and too dirty, can cause starting trouble and rapid wear.
• Safety-related systems, including windshield wipers, lights, tires, steering and suspension parts.
“Most of these cold weather services were essential in the ’20’s, and surprisingly, they’re being neglected today,” concludes Lehman. “Our advice to motorists: spend a few dollars now to take care of you car and it will take care of you through the tough months ahead.”
