is the least expensive form of preventive maintenance I can think of. So it is surprising to see fluid conditions near the top of the failure list when we check vehicles during National Car Care Month.

Reviewing the results of the last four years of checking thousand of vehicles, the Car Care Council reports more than 17 percent failed a check of at least one of the fluids:
• 26 percent had dirty oil or showed low oil level;
• 29 percent had inadequate antifreeze protection or were low on antifreeze;
• 16 percent were low on automatic transmission fluid or had burned or dirty fluid;
• nearly 10 percent were low on brake fluid;
• more than 12 percent needed windshield washer solvent.
Each of these vital fluids affects the life and performance of a vehicle and/or the safety of the driver and its passengers.
Owning a “good old car” and keeping it pristine is in vogue today, concludes the Council. Considering the alternatives, it appears to be an increasingly attractive answer to vehicle ownership.
