There’s no doubt about it — fall is a popular time for car care.
Newspapers are full of advertisements for pre-winter specials -*r * from local repair shops, and auto parts stores are teeming with take-charge do-ityourselfers.
Indeed, fall is such a popular time for auto repairs, that October has been declared National Car Care Month.
But whether you’re a do-it-yourselfer, or rely on auto technicians, it’s important to practice environmentally sound auto care and maintenance — year ’round.
Car care is a win-win situation. Besides helping the environment, a properly maintained and operated vehicle runs more efficiently, is safer, and should last longer — up to 50 percent longer, according to a survey of ASE-certified Master Auto Technicians.
The following tips, from the pros at the non-profit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), can put you on the road to environmentally conscious car care.
• Keep your engine tuned up: a misfiring spark plug can reduce fuel efficiency as much as 30 percent. Follow the service schedules listed in the owner’s manual. Replace filters and fluids as recommended. You’ll help cut down on air pollution too!
• Check tires for proper inflation. Underinflation wastes fuel — the engine has to work harder. Wheels that are outof-line (as evidenced by uneven tread wear or vehicle pulling to one side) also rob energy. And, properly maintained tires
