lion worth of construction activities will occur in Virginia, creating over 3,600 new constuction jobs and producing other positive benefits that will ripple throughout the economy. Twenty-two million dollars in additional tax revenues for Virginia will be generated as well.
Virginia’s colleges, universities, and community colleges have been without a state-supported capital outlay program since 1986. Yet, in the intervening years enrollment in those institutions has increased by „ 40,000 students. Existing physical i. facilities are already strained.
They will be unable to accommodate the 65,000 additional students that will be thrust upon them by the end of the decade. A strong, vibrant higher education system is the most important factor securing our future economic growth and propserity.
Without a continued superior system of higher education in Virginia. we simply will not be able to succeed in the highly competitive, global market that we face. Our investment in education today will pay enormous dividends in the future.
Our state park system contributes more than $80 million towards Virginia’s second largest industry — tourism. Yet, much of our park’s infrastructure is crumbling. Several have had no significant capital improvements since the Civilian Conservation Corps era.
