To the Editor:
As a self-employed small business person in Rappahannock County, I know first hand the taxes and paper work small business must deal with to operate. In times of rapid growth in the economy, we must also have attractive wage and benefit programs to pick up good employees. In slow growth times as is the current market, we must scale back and down size in order to stay competitive. During both of these periods profitability is often hard to come by; and all business (especially now) is affected no matter the number of employees you have.
Gov. Bill Clinton and his advisors (both in his campaign and in Congress) do not understand private business at all, or they would not even suggest a “7 percent play or pay” tax. Taxes are levied on net profit not on size of company.
Mr. Clinton says he is for change, and I’m sure it will be and at the cost of small businesses. Small business is the backbone of this nation and has been since our colonial beginnings.
