“My car isn’t running right. Do you think it may need a tune-up?,” inquires the owner of a three-year-old car. She’s asking her auto technician who, like others in his profession, sometimes finds himself wrestling with the term “tune-up.”
“The expression just won’t go away,” says Car Care Council president Don Midgley, “and 1 doubt that we want it to. People may not always understand what a tune-up’ means, but they do know it may help cure their vehicle’s ailments. It’s analogous to the term ‘physical check-up’ when we don’t feel up to par.”
Get a Check-Up
Because the engines in most vehicles are equipped with solid state, computer controlled fuel and ignition systems, a tune-up often is preceded by a diagnostic procedure. This helps determine what parts, if any, may be needed beyond replacement of spark plugs and filters.
