The risk is compounded when coolant loss leads to overheating before the temperature gauge or warning light sensor can signal the driver that there is a problem. When this occurs, says the Car Care Council, an engine can suffer major heat damage in a minute or less. To avoid such an unpredictable failure, suggests the Council, service the cooling systems at least every other year, and replace coolant-carrying hoses every four years.
