urge those Virginians to elect real environmental leaders, Gov. Bill Clinton and Senator Albert Gore as President and Vice-President.
Bush/Quayle have sought to divide Americans against each other in the environmental arena as well as in other areas — environment versus economy; business versus natural resources. We should reject this rhetoric.
As Gov. Clinton has stated, environment versus economy is a false choice that is bad for the environment and bad for the economy. The Cold War has ended; but we can uAe U.S. research capabilities to develop new environmental technologies to protect the environment, create jobs, and compete in the world markets. For example, the new Clean Air Act challenges us to develop more fuel efficient cars that can compete both in the U.S. and abroad with the models made by the Japanese. And other equipment is needed to meet Clean Air Act standards — equipment that Germany and Japan now produce.
The demands for a clean environment have spawned millions of new jobs in Europe and America over the past 20 years. More recently, we have created more jobs in the aluminum recycling business than exist in the production of new aluminum.
In Virginia, tourism is our second largest industry. From Mt. Rogers in Southwest Virginia to Mount Vernon in Northern Virginia, we need to protect the attractions our visitors come to see and the dollars they spend in our local communities.
We also want to preserve the environment for the industries that depend on clean water, air and land — the seafood industry; timberlands to produce forest products; and farmlands that produce grain, cattle and horses. All can prosper only if our environment is preserved and pro
