We thought the emphasis on body count — how many dead Vietnamese we could rack up each week and month — as a measure of our government’s success with its war policy, smacked of genocide, and we believed our government was not forthright on a host of matters related to the war, including its alleged efforts to make peace.
Every sort of legal protest seemed urgent to us and the idea that we weren’t being loyal, patriotic citizens never entered any of our heads, nor, I believe does it today. Several of my friends made annual or semi-annual visits to Vietnam and Paris to help keep the protest fully informed. Incidentally, these individuals always reported their findings first to the appropriate people at the State Department.
A number of other things George Bush has said to discredit Bill Clinton have made me wonder whether Mr. Bush doesn’t understand the fundamental principle of our government, or whether we can only trust him to try to skew things up and misrepresent situations in the hope that he can fool enough people to win re-electipn. I have not decided which of these alternative possibilities is the more disquieting.
