At the waste-water plant along the Thornton River, the students quickly became aware of how sewage is treated and that it’s “a problem" that must be tended to because it won’t really disappear after it goes down the drain. They viewed the plant from atop the tanks that process the waste-water, purifying it before it is returned to the river.
As they clambered up the tanks’ steel stairway with plant operator John Price, who led the tour and described the treatment process, some grabbed their noses and made the comments you’d expect from kids looking down on thousands of gallons of murky sewage. “It’s gross,” said one of the students, as others laughed.
Rut they agreed that the smell actually wasn't that bad considering the volume of matter they were looking at. They quickly became accustomed to the odor once Price began explaining the process.
