terested in selling timber and having it logged, and there are one or more streams with running water at the time of harvest, the logger and the landowner must ensure that the stream will be kept free of sediment. This means that proper sized culvert pipes or bridges are properly installed at all stream crossings, there will be no skidding or equipment in streams, and BMP’s will be implemented. Failure to do so will result in action taken to enforce this law.

Since 1988 the Department of Forestry has been monitoring all timber harvesting operations for compliance with the voluntary BMP program as well as the Seed Tree Law and the Debris In Stream Law. The new law complements the existing water quality program.

Preharvest planning is the, best defense against problems associated with logging. If you are interested in selling timber, or any forestry related activity, your first step is to contact the local DOF office. We can develop management plans and will provide assistance based on your objectives at no cost.

Details of this new law’ or any forestry inquiries can be obtained from the DOF at P.O. Box 148 Madison, Va. or by calling 948-5341.
