The Hunter Championship Finals will begin at noon, Sunday, Oct. 3, at Glenwood Park as the opener to the Sunday race meet.
Finalists follow Middleburg huntsman Albert Poe and his hounds on a drag hunt around the race course area. A variety of awards are then presented including an overall championship.
“It is so much fun to hunt with all the different hunts. It gives you a wonderful opportunity to hunt with different packs," said Joan Batterton, who won the competition in 1986 with Beacon Rock and in 1992 with Candy Man.
The field master of the Blue Ridge Hunt, who has more than 50 years of hunting experience, offered some advice on winning, “I think it takes a real good hunter — one that isn’t phased by anything and it takes a good jumper.”
The cost of $100 includes the four days of hunting and general admission to the race meet.
