The battle was marked by the spirited charge of 247 cadets aged 15 to 17 from the Virginia Military; Insititute, the first and only time that an American cadet corps has participated in pitched battle. The site is preserved and maintained today by VM1 as the Neir Market Battlefield Historical Park.

Mr. Baumgardner, a former Rappahannock County Commonwealth Attorney, graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1973 and is a current member of the VMI Board of Visitors. His presentation will focus on the battle and the role played by VMI and its alumni and faculty in the Civil War.
