The horse’s single hurdle start was over the natural hedges at that rolling Orange course in Nov. 1988. He placed second.
“He is just a brilliant jumper,” Yovanovich said. “He has hunted each winter since we got him in the early fall of 1988. He is a wonderfiil field hunter, and the [varied terrain and differing obstacles] are good training for a timber horse. Unless a horse has performed badly do I school much between hunting and racing seasons.”
Friendly Retreat, a son of stakes winner Final RetreatFriendly Flower, was bred in Maryland. Sire Final Retreat formerly stood in Berryville at Audley Farm.
In his own racing career, Final Retreat won on the flat in England and Germany, and won a steeplechase at Munich at the age of seven. Jumping was in the genes, then, and Friendly Flower’s 1984 colt may have been bom to ’chase.
