Not many horses of any calling can claim perfection, or anything near it, but in his carefully mapped, carefully planned timber racing career, Marion Vere Nicoll’s Friendly Retreat is close, very close.
In just 11 lifetime starts over timber, the 9-year-old Marylandbred has won nine, placed second once and fourth once. In just his second full year of racing, the two-time point-to-point timber champ is currently poised at the summit of the Virginia Steeplechase Association standings for year-end honors.
The locally-based timber specialist has an eye on the bigger and better prizes of the autumn’s sanctioned competition. Trainer Donald Yovanovich said that the gelding is pointed towards the Southern States Triple Crown Timber Championship.
