Friendly Retreat was purchased as a yearling and found his way to Dorothy Smithwick’s Middleburg farm to train as a youngster. He never started while at Sunnybank.
Yovanovich purchased the horse as a 4-year-old in August of 1988. He raced twice for his original new owner, Shea-Robert Sheahan — once on the flat at Fair Hill and once, a third place, over Montpelier’s hurdle course.
A change of ownership was in the works soon, however. Yovanovich had previously trained and ridden several pointto-point champs for Molly Nicoll through the years including I Chase The Clouds, Frog Prince and ParsonoftheHills.
The trainer suggested that Friendly Retreat would suit her stable perfectly, and his next start in the spring of ’89 was under Mrs. Nicoll’s gray and white hooped silks.
