The ’92 winner, Bettina Belmont Ward’s Ask Don went on to place second and third in the other two series events to take the championship for his Middleburg owner.
The 1991 winner of the Great Meadow event, John Griggs’ Warm Spell went on to be crowned champion 3-year-old in that year. He came back to be a multiple stakes winner in ’92 and ’93 for his Kentucky connections.
As steeplechasers may not start over fences in sanctioned events until the early summer of their third year, (though they may point-to-point,) nominees to the series of events are identifiable only by their owners, trainers, riders and breeding.
A few may have been seen in the state this spring pointing around the hunt courses, or perhaps on the flat.
True horsemanship kicks in when handicapping juveniles, though, and racegoers can have fun with their name recognition and conformation judging in the paddock, choosing pre-race favorites. I".-'-.
