Because the eastern hemlock is a conifer and not a deciduous tree, lost and damaged needles are not replaced. Some studies indicate that the adelgid irtsects further damage the hemlocks by injecting toxic substances into the tree. The insect feeds primarily on the eastern hemlock and the less common Carolina hemlock. The western hemlock, which is not found in this part, of the country, has not been affected by the insects so far.
A native of eastern Asia, the hemlock woolly adelgid appeared in the western United States in the 1920s and in the Richmond area in the early 1950s. Since then the insect has spread to eastern West Virginia and south-central Virginia, and as far north as Massachusetts. It was first discovered in the park in 1988 along the North Fork of the Thornton River outside of Sperryville.
