The Callaway race has more than just the prize money dangling as a lure for the runners — the first-annual Lonesome Glory shipping bonus of $10,000 will be given to the horse with the highest placings in the American legs, one of which must be the Georgia event.
Overseas shipping fees, as horsemen well know, are phenomenally high, thus the incentive will be graciously received.
Cheltenham’s world-renowned racecourse 75 miles northwest of London hosts the next series event Dec. 11.
Runners chase a 25,000 pound (today, about $20,000) purse over that stiffly challenging, two-mile oval. Starting in the chute midcourse, novices race one full circuit to make up the 21/2-mile distance, including the exhausting stretch run, uphill for a full halfmile.
(It was up this daunting drive that in ’92, Lonesome Glory dug in and beat favorite A1 Muthm by the merest of heads to claim the Sport of Kings bonus.)
The final leg of the series takes place Dec. 28 at the Chepstow course in Wales. A purse of 10,000 pounds (about $7,500) is set for the flat two-mile test.
