VGCA President Melville “Chuck” Church III knew Court as a portraitist. Court painted portraits of Church’s children and many of their mutual friends, who he often depicted with their horses. Church was also familiar with Court’s dramatic landscapes and believed he would be able to capture the essence of the Broadview course while characterizing the fast-paced action of the Gold Cup. . “We found the angle that showed the Broadview Course th< way I thought most people would remember it,” Church said, “and that’s the view he depicted.”
The following fall the forerunner of the International Gold Cup, the Great Meadow, initiated the Great Meadow steeplechase course in The Plains. Each year thereafter, the Gold Cup chose an artist to depict some aspect of the spring and fall races.
The paintings quickly become identifying symbols for the Gold Cup races as posters and, in some cases, limited edition prints, are produced and distributed. Interestingly, Court’s painting of the last Broadview Gold Cup has sold more prints and posters than any of the succeeding paintings.
Court is once again in partnership with the Virginia Gold Cup Association, this time by depicting the International Gold Cup, now held each third Saturday in October.
