SET HIM DOWN — When a rider gathers a horse for a final burst of speed at the end 6f a race, he is said to set the horse down.
START—The start of steeplechases does not include a starting gate, however, there are a variety of ways to ensure a level start in a race. One way is to line entries up behind an elastic starting tape, circle them, call riders to turn for the tape, then release the band to pop across the course.
Riders have been known to complain that the tape can too easily fail, though, and becoming more popular is the old fashioned walk-up start which simply entails riders forming a line then turning towards two flag men for the start.
