PADDOCK — Spectators can watch their “betting’’ choices being tacked up in the paddock. They can see owners, trainers and riders discussing racing strategy and last-minute tactics. From the paddpck, runners join the post parade to arrive at the starting point for the particular distance of the race.
PURSE — The money distributed to the first five finishers in a race is called the purse. Unless otherwise noted, distribution is 1st - 60 percent, 2nd - 20 percent, 3rd -11 percent, 4th - 6 percent, 5th -3 percent. However, some races with larger purses start by paying the winner 50 percent, and then pay down to sixth place. Some flat races pay 100 percent to the winner.
