The Friday at the Library series at the Rappahannock County Library gets underway with a battle. But don’t worry — the fight took place more than 100 years ago.
At 8 p.m. Friday, September 10, Douglas K. Baumgardner will deliver a presentation on the Battle of New Market, an early battle of the Civil War and victory for Confederate forces.
This confrontation occurred in New Market on May 15, 1864, when Confederate General John Breckinridge, commanding a force of 5,000 troops, routed a Union army of 6,500 led by General Franz Sigel to maintain Confederate control of the Shenandoah Valley.
Although the Confederate victory halted Sigel’s southern advance toward Staunton, determined Union armies regained control of the Shenandoah Valley a few months later and controlled it for the remainder of the War.
