From his record, Friendly Retreat is one of them. Lightly raced, carefully placed and conservatively handled, the local gelding may soon join Yovanovich’s long list of VSA year-end timber champs.
As is his usual training regimen, Yovanovich has been conservative with Friendly Retreat and his other runners during these hot, dry summer months, utilizing the nearby Middleburg training center and swim center for exercise.
In its first two years, the timber triple crown has produced a good group of jumping specialists for horsemen and racegoers to follow week to week. As Yovanovich noted, the money is good —almost $90,000 is up for grabs in purses and bonus money.
Friendly Retreat is a local contender to cheer and support.
