BREAST COLLAR — (also breast plate, yoke, martingale) A strap of leather around the horse’s chest to keep the saddle in place is a breast collar. Horses, especially herring-gutted or wasp-waisted ones, can easily “run through their tack” and displace the saddle. This also provides a handy grab-strap for riders in the event of an emergency.
