Lt. Connie Smith, a 19-year-veteran of the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s office, has announced that she will run for Rappahannock County Sheriff this fall. “It’s always been in the back of my head that one day I would run,’ she said, “I think that day has come.”

The announcement means that Rappahannock County votes will be split in a three-way election this fall. RCSO Major Christopher Williams has already announced his bid for Sheriff and J.C. Welch, a former RCSO employee, has also joined the race. Welch currently works for the Culpeper Police Department.

Smith graduated from Rappahannock County High School in 1985 and began working for the RCSO as a dispatcher in 1988. Smith currently serves the RCSO as the primary investigator, a position she has held since 2000, gaining a reputation
