This is the first open sheriff election in over 30 years since there is not an incumbent Sheriff seeking re-election. Current Rappahannock County Sheriff Larry Sherertz has stated that he wants to retire and is not interested in running for re-election.
Leadership style
Smith has served under three different sheriffs during her career; John Henry Woodard, Gary Settle, and current Sheriff Larry Sherertz.
She said that she would develop her own style of leadership, taking a few pointers from past administrations. “Anyone who is sheriff in this county has to be a working sheriff,” she stated, “You have to be willing to come out when you are called and be there for your people.”
Smith noted that she wants to bring her availability and accountability to the position. '
“What Rappahannock needs now is a sheriff that is going to be there for its citizens,” she said, “I want citizens to look up to the office, to trust the office, and feel that their problem will be taken care of.”
