Two members of the Headquarters Company were killed in Afghanistan when their vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device. The battalion was released from active federal service in July 2005.
According to Lt. Col. Carter, there are currently 7,400 personnel serving in the Virginia Army National Guard, and 1,200 in the Virginia Air National Guard.
Since Sept. 11,2001, nearly 5,500 Army and 2,130 Air Guardsmen have entered active federal service in support of Operation Noble Eagle (homeland defense), Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Air Expeditionary Force operations.
