swapped to hurdles last tall, Swimming River placed at Camden in November and brained well over the winter at « conditioner Paul Rowland’s Pennsylvania farm before breaking his maiden at Little Everglades March 11. He returned to action at the April 14 Strawberry Hill Races at Colonial Downs, starting well and jumping to the lead with jockey Paddy Young. Though Tbughkenamon threatened at the last, Swimming River gained a length at the fence and drew off to win by three. Lone Arrow got up for second, with Tbughkenamon recovering from a mistake at the last to finish third.
“This is our first ‘chaser” said a breathless Monica Ryan in the winner's circle. “It’s been really rewarding to give our horses a second career.”
Rowland said that Swimming River just needed a change from the grind of training and racing on the flat. “He was sour” Rowland said. A little turnout and hacking in the Pennsylvania hunt country around his Hermitage Farm base (Hermitage being the former training center of Hall of Fame trainer Burley Cocks) was what it took to set Swimming River right. “He’s a promising young horse,” Rowland said. “He just needed to get his mind straight.”
Flint Hill’s Clorevia Farm was represented by allowance winner Udeman. Their Focus On A Star was second in the maiden.
