Problems There are about 75 species of ticks in the United Stares. They are parasites of nearly al land vertebrates, including snakes, tortoises, birds, and most species of mammals. when they have been exposed to high tide areas. Repellents containing DEET are effective when applied to socks, pants, and exposed parts of the body. Wear protective clothing, such as long pants and boots when entering tide-infested areas. ' Cutting grass and either vegetation in a four to six foot band along each side of walkways and paths will reduce tick populations. Grass over six inches nigh protects ticks against drying in the sun, tall vegdation also nas the efisadvantage of providing cover for heist animals, such as mice.
