rain then sun/warmth. Other factors certainly come into play especially for hunting early vs late season (here that means early April vs late April/early May) but us hunter/gatherers are excited by the spring showers.
Hmm.. taking this into account you probably realize that this will be a skewed year for morels. The cold and lack of precip (till recently) has kept the traditionally early morels at bay.
Normally the ‘black uns’ (usually more pointy at top and darker in color) start popping around the first of April and continue to nearly the end of the month.
The much prized ‘white merkles’ (shorter stem, bigger and whiter cap) typically start around the 10th or so of April and go till the first week or so of May.
