School board officials accepted the resignation of Rappahannock County Athletic Director J.D. Almond last night dining their monthly meeting. The resignation takes effect June 30.
“If you are not having fun and you dread coming to work every day it’s time to get out,” Almond said in an interview, noting that he had been thinking about resigning for a while.
Almond said that his job was frustrating as he became the “fall guy” anytime something went wrong.
“It’s hard to take the blame sometimes when you had no control or input of decisions made from higher tip,” he said. Almond is the fifth athletic director in seven years for the ■ county’s public schools.
Almond stated that he took the job hoping he could rebuild Rappahannock’s reputation in the Bull Run District and the community, but often found his hands tied. Last fall was a difficult time for the athletic department, as Almond dealt with the troubled football program. The program received heightened criticism, and subsequent coach resignations.
Former head coach Kemp Pullen had wanted to take the program out of the Bull Run District and go independent, to no avail. Almond said that it was also difficult watchring the Athletic Department receive additional criticism as another lean budget year * approached.; v “- • ■
“As one parent put it, that’s the Rappahannock way,” Almond said.
Almond said that in spite of everything he is very pleased with the spring season.
