RCPS officials have stated that the school will not allow media employees on school property. “We do not want to make a circus environment for our students here at the schools,” Chappell said.
“Emily wanted to change the world and, given time, she undoubtedly would have,” said RCHS principal Roger Mello on Wednesday. “She had already changed the lives of the many people who loved her here at home.”
McCarthy, a friend of the Hilschers, became the default media contact for the family as well a$ the county.
“It’s been a deluge,” McCarthy said, after spending all day fielding state, national and international phone calls.
“Some of the requests by media outlets have been simply appalling,” he added, noting that some networks were already asking to interview with the family only a day after the tragedy.
The Hilschers have refused to speak with any media outlets at this time and are currently considering funeral arrangements.
McCarthy added that the county has promised to supply the family with any level of security necessary.
“The family has decided that they need to grieve and that they need to work through this,” McCarthy stated. “As a community, we will try to give them the space to do that.”
The Hilscher family has asked that, in lieu of flowers or similar expressions of individual grief and sympathy, that donations be made in Emily’s name to the Rappahannock Animal Welfare League, a favorite cause of their beloved daughter.
