Lpollowipg is additional infor-L mation regarding the comments Barbara Adolfi made in her column of April 7, on the use of Bacillus thuringiensis (B.t.) as treatment for bag worms and tent caterpillars.
B.t. is a commercial microbial insecticide that is sold under various trade names. It is one several approved treatments for infestations of bag worms and tent caterpillars. B. t. is on the pesticide to be effective.
It must also be ingested in sufficient quantity to do its job. Most importantly, B. t. is indiscriminate in its effectiveness, and will kill beneficial larvae (i. e. butterfly caterpillars) in addition to the specific pest being treated.
To treat for bag worms, B.t. must be used when larvae are - young - from mid to late June. Consistent effort of several apphcations over several weeks will probably be necessary.
