Sherertz said his primary goal is to respect the family as they grieve. “The press has swarmed into Blacksburg and is now descending on the [Hilscher] family,” Sherertz said. “Right now the best thing is to give them the privacy to let them heal.”
The sheriff stated that an armed deputy will be at the Hilschers’ Woodville residence to provide security. Deputies will also patrol the Thornhills’ home.
“This is very personal and tragic for the entire county,” McCarthy said. “It breaks your heart when you know that a girl’s life that was full of promise has been cut short.” Community response
Classes were canceled Tuesday at Rappahannock County Public Schools due to power outages and downed trees caused by high winds.
The day also allowed students and faculty to cope with the loss.
“We extend our thoughts, prayers and sincere condolences to the family of 2006 RCHS graduate Emily Hilscher, her many friends and her teachers as we all mourn the loss of this bright, talented young lady,” said Rappahannock County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Robert Chappell. “No words can completely express our collective community sorrow upon the untimely, tragic passing of this child.”
“This is tragic, this is just so tragic,” said a teacher at the school in the first hours after hearing the news. “She was the smartest and most beautiful girl.”
