A draft budget proposal for fiscal 2008 is calling for a 3-cent increase in Rappahannock County's real-estate tax.
The document, which was issued last Week by County Administrator John McCarthy, shows a real-estate tax rate of 61 cents per $100 of assessed property value. The fiscal 2007 tax rate was 58 cents.
Expenditures for the proposed fiscal 2008 budget total $20,463,850 — up from $19,394,547 last year.
McCarthy said his initial budget proposal to the County Board of Supervisors “is always the worst-case scenario in terms of tax increase” and the supervisors “always cut some” expenses before approving the budget.
The largest component of the county’s budget is for the public schools, which is asking for $12,281,902 for the next fiscal year. The schools’ fiscal 2007 budget was $11,732,992.
