In treating for tent caterpillars, B.t. should only be used in early spring, when new growth is developing and caterpillars are small.
Tent caterpillars leave the nest to feed during the day so any spraying must be at this time, and be a full-coverage spray of the entire tree.
This is not always feasible for the home gardener. A more practical approach is to remove the tents at dusk with a gloved hand and rag. Place the rag and nest material in a plastic bag and dispose of it in the trash. While unsightly, a defoliation by tent caterpillars will not normally harm a healthy tree.
