In early 1945, late in World War H, the Battle of Iwo Jima was the first American land assault on Imperial Japanese territory. Iwo Jima, a small island, was defended tenaciously by a well-entrenched enemy and tens of thousands died in the battle, one of the fiercest of the Pacific campaign.
