metaphor of how fragile our world and ecosystem can be, a longtime hunter recently told me that 30 or 40 years ago most any mountain would produce ‘trash cans full/ I have only experienced the euphoria of coming upon a new patch of hundreds of morels a few times but it is quite an experience (‘take your shirt off for a sack!’). Whether it’s pesticides, acid rain, logging, or building that has their numbers down..there are still way more morels rotting out there for lack of picking. Yea, I know, seems like an oxymoron or something but it’s true..so get out there Rappahannock!
Tips/etiquette for
morel hunters
• respect your neighbors and the environment-ask first (bring them a few later, don’t fitter etc)
• wear breathable long pants/sleeves
• try to go with a friend or tel] someone you are going (and location...well..smile)
• bring knife-cut morel at base, don’t pull up by roots
• bring wicker style basket with small holes in bottom (spores disperse walking with merkles)
