Nearly 600 Virginia Army National Guardsmen serving in the 3rd Battalion, 116th Infantry - including members of Co. B, which is split between the Warrenton and Woodstock armories — will be deployed to Iraq later this year.
According to VANG Public Affairs Officer Lt. Col. Chester Carter III, the Guardsmen have been called to federal service beginning June 23,2007, for a period of 13 months in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The 3rd Battalion units to be deployed are: Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Winchester; Company A, Charlottesville and Harrisonburg; Company B, Warrenton and Woodstock; Company C, Leesburg; and Company D, Fredericksburg.
There are 73 soldiers in the Headquarters Company, and 131 soldiers in each of the line companies. According to Lt. Col. Carter, all of the companies are currently at authorized strength, or “will be by the time of deployment."
After spending a few days at their home stations, the troops will travel to Camp Shelby, Miss., where they will undergo additional training and issued equipment in preparation for their mission in Iraq. As part of the mobilization, the command structure will be modified.
